Troubleshoot an offline or low-power tracker
Check power, coverage, reporting mode and recent events when a hardware tracker stops updating on the map.
An offline status means Track My Ride has not received a recent update from the tracker. It does not necessarily mean the tracker has failed: loss of vehicle power, weak mobile coverage and an intentional low-power reporting mode can all delay updates.
Before you start
Note the last update time and the vehicle's current situation: parked, underground, being serviced, or affected by a flat or disconnected battery. Ask whether the vehicle has recently had electrical work. This context helps you separate expected reporting gaps from power or installation faults.
Some battery-powered trackers intentionally report less often while stationary. Do not remove trim, probe wiring or replace a fuse unless you are qualified to work on the vehicle.
Read the tracker lights
Tap the tracker lightly to wake it before reading the lights. On supported models, the two green lights indicate:
Light: Navigation (GPS)
Pattern: Solid
Meaning: Searching for Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites
Light: Navigation (GPS)
Pattern: Flashing once per second
Meaning: GPS signal acquired
Light: Navigation (GPS)
Pattern: Off
Meaning: Powered off or sleeping
Light: Status (network)
Pattern: Flashing once per second
Meaning: Normal operation
Light: Status (network)
Pattern: Dim flash every two seconds
Meaning: Sleeping
Light: Status (network)
Pattern: Brief fast flashing
Meaning: Connecting to a mobile network
Light: Status (network)
Pattern: Off
Meaning: Powered off or sleeping
An unlit sleeping tracker may wake when tapped. If neither light responds, check the power connection and vehicle battery before treating the issue as a coverage fault.
Steps
- Open Map, select the vehicle and record its last update time and available power information. This gives you a baseline for checking whether a new report arrives.
- Open Reports > Raw GPS Data, enable Include metadata and inspect the latest available records for external power, network and GPS status. Metadata is supporting technical information recorded with each location. Vehicles > Events shows commands sent to the tracker, not a history of power disconnections.
- Open Settings > Account and confirm that the hardware licence is active. An inactive licence prevents normal hardware tracking.
- If it is safe and permitted, move the vehicle outdoors where it has a clear view of the sky and mobile coverage, then start it.
- Allow the tracker an opportunity to report, refresh Map, and compare the new last update time with your baseline.
- If the lights are on but no update arrives and Support asks you to remove all power, follow Power cycle a GPS tracker. The backup battery must become fully depleted before reconnection.
- If no update arrives and the tracker has fixed wiring, ask a qualified installer to check the fuse, constant power, ground and ignition source against the model-specific installation guide.
- Refresh Map after Support or the installer completes the corrective action, then confirm that the last update time advances.
What happens next
A newer last update time confirms that Track My Ride has received data again. In a mobile blackspot, supported trackers can continue recording points internally and upload them when coverage returns, so missing sections of the path can fill in later. Continue to monitor the vehicle if the cause was not clear.
Trackers connected only to accessory power switch off with the vehicle and may take longer to acquire GPS after each start. Constant power is recommended for normal operation. If external power is disconnected, the tracker runs from its internal backup battery only until that battery is depleted.
Troubleshooting
- The tracker works while driving but not when parked: Garages, sheds, underground car parks, terrain and nearby metal can weaken mobile or GPS reception. Compare the location with the Coverage map layer and recent Raw GPS Data.
- A deeply sleeping tracker has not communicated: Confirm the configured sleep mode and whether the vehicle has moved before changing wiring. Wake and reporting behaviour varies by tracker model and selected settings.
- Neither light turns on: Confirm the 12-pin cable is seated, check the vehicle battery and inspect for water damage. For a hardwired installation, a qualified installer can test with the original On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) cable to distinguish a wiring fault from a tracker fault.
- Power, licence and coverage are confirmed but no update arrives: Contact Support with the tracker identifier, last update time and completed checks. Never include an account password or API key.
